A GENERAL LIST OF THINGS TO DO IF A DISASTER STRIKES
- Stay calm. Staying calm and patient will help you move safely and avoid delays or accidents caused by irrational behavior. Many people will be trying to accomplish the same things you are for the safety of their families. Patience will help everyone get through a difficult situation more easily.
- Check for injuries. If accessible get your Disaster Preparedness Kit. Give first aid and get help for seriously injured people. Taking care of yourself will allow you to help others safely until emergency responders arrive.
- Follow your disaster plan. If it calls for sheltering at home stay put until authorities say it's safe to leave. Maintain a 24 hour communications watch. Take turns listening to the radio or TV if operational. Tune into your local emergency channel 1610AM for information on the incident, evacuation, location of emergency shelters or advice from emergency services.
- If authorities call for an evacuation gather your family and go. Notify others where you are going. If you have time secure your home by locking doors and windows. Unplug electrical equipment except for freezers and refrigerators unless there is a risk of flooding. Follow recommended evacuation routes. Do not take short cuts. Avoid flooded areas and downed power lines.
- Check on neighbors who may require special assistance.
- Stay alert to hazards. Check for gas leaks, electrical shorts, damaged sewer and water lines. If sewer or water lines are compromised do not use facilities or water from tap. Watch for loose ceiling plaster indicating a compromised ceiling.
- Do not use candles. Use battery powered lanterns or flashlights.
- Follow instructions from emergency officials.
- Watch your animals closely. Pets may become disoriented. Check for damaged fences. Be aware of hazards at nose, paw and hoof level such as spilled chemicals. Expect behavior changes causing them to become aggressive or defensive.
